threw a live grenade from the trenches We'd had quite a bit of school on that but it was our first real grenade throwing. Those we used are exactly like those used at the front today. Same amount of explosives in them and all. When one whistle blows you get ready. At the second whistle we pull the pin. This pin holds down a lever which when released sets off a cap. At the third whistle we throw the bomb as far as we can. When the pin is pulled the lever is held down by the fingers which grip the bomb tightly. When you throw the bomb, or grenade, rather this lever flies off setting off a cap which may explode
