states including the District of Columbia. At nearly every place we stopped the Red Cross gave us stamped postcards, smokes, ice cream, chewing gum, coffee, sandwiches, doughnuts, and magazines. We certainly appreciated it too. We were turned loose at two or three places along the road but not for very long at a time of course. We went the Southern Route then San Antonio, Houston to New Orleans. There we were free to go wherever we pleased from 1 to 4 a.m. Three hours in the dead of night. A
