Saving...
April 16, 1945 Dear Mother, Just time for a note as I can mail it when I go to the officers mess for dinner with Helen C. & her roommate. Then a short visit, a dish of ice cream at the club and home to bed, as tomorrow I start out. I'll try to write you when I get there, but may need a days sleep before I'm real bright. I got along so well with my business here that I was free for the weekend. I went up to Oxford Saturday morning, had lunch with the girl and then Polly and I took a bus and went to Whitehall, Mrs. Brodtman was so delighted and surprised to see me and so were all the rest. Jay came that night and then Johnnie came Sunday afternoon and we all left about eight. I stayed last night with Joyce at the hospital, had lunch with Helen C. here and went to a meeting. Now I'm all set. It was a most touching thing to be in London when the President died. All over the city flags are at half mast, and I think there is more real sorrow unmixed by political bitterness, here than there would be at home. It was really tragic. Yesterday afternoon we spent lying on the flagstones in the formal garden by the pool sleeping and soaking up sun. The flowers are gorgeous. I'll write soon again. Johnnie leaves this week too and I hope I'll see her there. Love, Helen
