she romped on at a mile a minute. I went in and sat down for a while. She is teaching in the Sorbonne an evening class in French civilization for Americans on leave, etc. It was to be seven to eight so she invited me to dinner about eight forty-five. I hated to accept after what she had told me of the food situation, but she said, "Accept simply, as I invite you." so what could I do? Jacques came in; he is twenty six instead of twelve, which somehow surprised me. He is a nice young man and works in his father's office. M. [Houis?] was out of town for the weekend helping his mother move to a smaller house as a result of his father's death. I left and went back to the hotel and then returned and had dinner with the two of them in the evening. They were expecting her sister, but her train was late so she didn't get in. Her nephew, a most interesting young captain name Girard, showed up. He speaks some English, but we talked French anyway. He is some sort of secret police officer who has something to do with intercepting collaborators and Nazi sympathizers who try to return
