Saving...
Ciney, Belgium June 4, 1945 Dear Mother, I'm over in the craft shop at the chateau again. Six or seven men are pounding away and a silky little black puppy one of them brought in is asleep in a box under my coat. I haven't anything to answer so will ramble along. As things are shaping up I wouldn't be too surprised if a few months saw me on my way to far away places with perhaps a pretty good chance for a leave at home first. That seems to be the idea for the hospital and, as I rather like the unit, I think I'd rather stay by it than strike out as a casual with a big bunch of Red Cross girls. It won't be awfully soon probably, but might come by the end of the summer. I got a big box of things from Polly today. I left quite a few things for her to send when she got my address. With the exception of a strange intermingling of hot chocolate and Bathasweet (so I don't know whether to drink it or bathe in it) everything came well. Saturday night I had a wild, but for these parts quite usual, time. First let me explain that the surrounding country is full of air force men bored to death, but having acquired a German car or so apiece, about a dozen rooms in a chateau or big town house, or sometimes a house all to themselves.
