They are a charming, but somewhat eccentric lot. I went to the dance at the officers' club here with one of them Saturday night, a captain named Johnny Wade. He is a very good dancer and a nice-looking kid. Naomi went with another of them (Jim). The dance stopped at one and we finished up our cognac and coke (a horrible combination) about the same time, so they suggested that we go with them to Jim's house "just a little way" and have fried eggs. So we got into Johnny's little German car and off we went. It was a nice ride but somehow longer than we expected and involved cutting across a big bomber field. We got there and found that Jim lived there alone. We fixed the eggs, ate strawberries. We put the water on for coffee and then sat on the couch. Someone made fun of Jim's big flouncy floor lamp, so he turned it off and we sat in the dark. Finally the water boiled and we had coffee. It was about three thirty, and it took us an hour of arguing and maneuvering to get started home. They didn't think it looked well for us to come in at that hour and were quite hurt that we preferred not to wait till 8:30 or 9:00 to start home.
