Ciney, Belgium June 7, 1945 Dear Mother, I got letters 55& 56 a couple of days ago and 57 today, so I'll answer in between questions and jokes, etc. at the evening session at the chateau. It is a lovely day, and big solid white clouds are drifting along in the blue, and the swallows are twittering and swooping around the window. One man is drawing with crayola a big red rose to use on a lamp shade. He made the base out of a big brass shell. Another is painting little sailboats on a pair of wooden shoes. Another has just shellacked his pair and set them aside. I meant the recital of my ills to be funny, and I'm glad you realized it. I was tired then, after a strenuous winter in England, my trip over, my Paris siege and the trip here. I feel swell now, though, and eager for anything. Our patient load is way down, so we have been taking it easy lately. Better not start counting the weeks, or anything like that, as I don't know how things will work out. I'd prefer to stay here or in the occupation army for the rest of the summer, have a month or so at home and then go on to the Pacific. However, I definitely don't want
