Juan les Pins July 17, 1945 Paris - Les Bouquinistes Dear Mother, A million dollars wouldn't buy this sort of vacation; it is a combination of the best the Riviera has to offer in luxury, plus about 60,000 American officers on the loose and really having a good time. I think I wrote you Sunday night. Yesterday morning Kathleen Farwell (the R.C. girl I came on the train with from Paris) & I started to walk to Cannes along the sea. It was supposed to be only 4 miles, so we spurned the truck-bus that the army provides and walked & walked. Finally we gave up and flagged the truck coming back. We were lucky to get in as we were in civilian clothes. The poor men have to wear their insignia except on swimming trunks & you see them in the oddest costume.
