acceptable uniforms from dinner on, and only insignia on sport clothes before then. We just amble around as we want. It's more fun in some recognizable uniform, though, as the men aren't too keen on French girls and it is better to be American. After lunch we got in our swimming suits & went down to the beach which is just in front of the hotel through a little pine grove. The beach is sandy and we swam, bounced in the surf and visited with the people around us while we sunned. About 4 we came up, I did up my hair, took a bath to rinse off the salt, drank some tomato juice & took a nap till 6:45. Then I dressed up in my newly pressed blue jersey uniform dress, did my hair up high & we went to dinner. After dinner just as the music was starting for the terrace dance I happened to run into a major from Davenport who was with a Lt. Col., also from Davenport. I introduced them to Kathleen and they asked us to tour the night spots with them. Harold Bechtel, the major, is in Germany with Military Gov't. & Bob Schultz, the Lt. Col, is 90th Division. We took the G.I. bus down to Cannes & went first to the outdoor terrace at the Miramar, their hotel. Bob had a bottle of his ration liquor, so we had that. We drifted
