July 27, 1945 Juan-les-Pins Dear Mother, I forgot to keep track of when I wrote last, but think it was Monday, so I'll go on from there. If I repeat, forgive me. Tuesday I got up at noon, put on my slacks & went downtown (Cannes) after lunch. A couple of officers took me to the club for a coke & cookies & I visited with them till almost three & then went down to a hotel a block or so away to get a truck for a picnic. There were about eight girls & eighteen officers. We went about ten miles inland to a lovely villa owned by an American or English woman who just turned it over to us. We swam in her natural pool under a waterfall, ate her tomatoes in the garden, slept in her beach chairs, had a picnic & danced to her portable. I found an officer who was on the Iowa swimming team & who knew [illegible] well, also [Merle?] Miller. I visited mostly with a couple of cavalry officers named Bill & Stanley. We came home about 8:30. While I was waiting for a truck on out here I heard a nice looking captain who was also waiting, say "I don't think there'll be anyone to dance with out there." so I said "Come on out & I'll dance with you," and there was my date for the evening-
