Saving...
weren't enough berths to go around & I didn't want one anyway, so I spent the day on deck. I felt swell, with not even a twinge of seasickness although it was rough & lots of the girls were sick. When we docked (at Southampton) we waited & waited. Everyone went ashore but us. The crew went on leave. There we sat. A nice sergeant came along & offered us some bunks in the crew part of the ship, so Kay, Mary & I went down & slept in their beds about 11 - 12:30. Then there was hot air coming down the ventilator so we snooped around and found cooler places in a room marked "Mental Ward" in the Hospital area. I went up to see if anyone knew when we were getting off and a nice curly haired sailor (all American navy on the boat, the Exchequer) invited me to have a cup of coffee & toast with him, which I did, in a room labeled "Gun Crews only." By the way, we sighted two drifting mines in route & the guns opened up on them but missed. They look very sinister.
