xy 2. 2" & 3" Mi at Blackburns Ford - Early's brigade; also Brig. Gen. Bonham's brigade composed of the 11th North Carolina, 2d South Carolina Col. J.B. Kershaw. 3d South Carolina, 7th South Carolina, 8th South Carolina. The Union troops, in Col. Israel B. Richardson's Brigade were the 2d, Michigan Major A.W. Williams commanding; the 3d Michigan Col. Daniel McConnell, commanding; the 1st Mass, the 12th New York, "G", 1st. U.S. Actg Lieut Edwards o; "M", 2d U.S. Arty. Capt Hunt. - while Col. Wm.. Tecumseh Sherman, 3d..Brigade 1st. (Tylers) Division, in which was Battery "E". 3d U.S. Arty, Capt. R.B. Ayres.- was in support. Upon viewing the surrounding country, there was a good view of Bull Run, of the valley and of the Ridge Brig. Gen. Tyler order up + Benjamin's Artillery + namely of Edwards o Battery. 2 20-pounder rifle guns; Hunt's Battery 4 12-pounder rifle guns; and Ayres', "Field Battery", of 2 10-pounder rifle guns, 2 6-pounder smooth-bore, 2 12-pounder howitzers. and planted the rifle guns on the ridge, (and (the Regiments were in line).) the [two?] 20-pounder Parrotts opened fire - which guns were answered by the enemys battery: with the Second Michigan Infty. Major Williams in advance, and the Third Michigan Infty. Col. McConnell following, Col. Richardson advanced, down the slope and into the woods, where they met the enemy: the First Mass. and Twelfth New York following into line; skirmishing increased into severe musketry firing, and heavy cannonading, and the Michigan Regiments forced the rebels so strongly that the two pieces of Artillery and the Infantry were driven across Bull Run (Additional notes in left margin:-) + This same Lieut. B - "Benjamin's Battery" "9" Army Corps I saw engaged at Knoxville Nov 1863 - & was the Battery in Fort Saunders with double shotted guns. drove back Longstreets Charge - our 700 [in less than 7 men fell?] Pollock the Rebel Historian says this charge was not surpassed by Pickett's charge against Sickles at Gettysburg -
