January 18, 1946 Dear Mother, Letters 9, 10 & 11 and the check came today. Thanks for getting it to me so promptly, but I am annoyed about where you got it. I was particularly anxious that it should be my own money, perferably one of those bonds, so that it wouldn't have anything to do with your finances. You see, I didn't send $100. a month home all that time in order to have a hang-dog feeling every time I wanted to spend some. It is not principle and it is for use. So will you please replace this from a bond that is labeled with my name & then yours. And, if you will pardon me, to h--- with the interest! Now about the tax. They were right about the 1943 tax after all. I had the R.C. look it up. It seems the tax is on gross income, which means you pay tax on the part witheld for tax as well as on that you get. On second thought, I'll send all copies to you & the money to pay it. I'll also enclose a power of attorney I signed
