Ft. Davis, CZ February 7, 1946 Dear Mother, I guess I'd better get a letter off to you even if it is late. We went over to the Pacific side this afternoon on the train, attended a farewell dinner for the field supervisor & came back about 11. We left our car at [Gaten?] & picked it up to come home. Caroline stayed to go on a three day trip with Fran Chapman, so Helen Hutt & I are established at last in our permanent rooms, with out maid Julia, our dog Rags & our station wagon all at our command. Our apartment is the nicest I've ever seen. Yesterday, we got sprayed with DDT, as they do once a month. I haven't seen so much as a mosquito. The screens are very fine mesh. This is quite a setup. Here I am getting $225 a month, an allowance of $65. a month for food, free quarters, free maid, a station wagon with free gas & service, free telephone, all repairs to quarters free. It's certainly the life! The climate is delightful on this side. There is a good breeze day & night & I always sleep with an army blanket over me. It rains off and on, but in short spurts. I guess the rainfall is 140 inches a year, but the ground is light & sandy & there isn't mud. By the way, I hear
