Saving...
PX there and then swam and played in the ocean and lay on the sand all afternoon. That sun is powerful, and today I am a bit "beety". We came home in time for supper at the club (we always eat the night meal and the Sunday dinner at the officers' club) The other meals we can eat there if we want, but we prefer to go to the PX, eat here at home, or at a hotel or clubhouse if we happen to be in the city. Last night I played cassino all evening with three Puerto Ricans, with about ten others as kibitzers. This morning we served coffee to about three hundred men who wanted to sleep late. They really enjoy stopping on Sunday morning for a visit and a cup of coffee and a doughnut. One of the mess halls makes the coffee for us and we get it in the station wagon. The doughnuts are made at the Beergarden on the post. We buy condensed milk and sugar (without restriction) at the PX. Our cups, napkins, and wooden spoons we get wholesale at a commissary. It takes some plans and some trotting around to get everything together, but it is not dull and I find it fun to be out so much. After we finished at 12 we had dinner after we dressed up. I wore my flame colored nylon dress. Oh, I forgot to say that this morning I encountered a regular army fellow who had been in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, southern France, northern France, Wales, and Germany. He had also been near the 130th in Belgium. We had a nice visit. He has reenlisted for two years. At dinner I met another ETO man, an officer who was familiar with the 91st at Oxford. This afternoon we hung up our things on some hangers a Capt. Jackson who is going home had given us. We also cleaned out our refrigerator and our kitchen cupboards so we'd know what we had. Then we took our empty bottles to the officers' club and stocked up on root beer, cokes, orange pop, etc. We ate at home this evening, and I have since washed my hair. Caroline just got back from her three days trip and we are taking her to the boat tomorrow morning. She's going home, you know. I guess that's all for now. Love, Helen
