Saving...
Wed night April 18, 1945 Dear Helen - Letter 5 of April 8th came this morning and of course is most upsetting. I feel as I did for about the first 6 or 8 months after you left here. Of late I sort of had you located - as to place - work & friends - now I'll have to get adjusted again just as you will too if moved. Not having any idea where Freddy is your remarks don't help much - last I knew he was near London - I have a nice, whole pitcher to the Britany tea set so am wondering if you mean that or some other set??? Will you see Herb Smith? or Dean Packer? I wish package 38 with your birthday pants from Betty had been the one you got instead of 39 with the catalogue. There are now 7 boxes on the way to you and alas! one is lunch cloths and there is another cloth in no 44 - couldn't you take out the other shrimp and send the lunch cloths to one of the girls at the 91st (she wouldn't have to pay duty) and tell her to give them to your English volunteers. The box with mostly lunch cloths No 43) also has in it 3 doz crochet hooks - plastic clothes pins and complexion veil. I mailed 44 yesterday and Betty mailed 45 today - Presume I'd better hold off in sending the next one till I hear from you - Had I? I'll send this letter to the old APO - but will send a V mail to the 887 so you'll know all is well here - I shouldn't have mentioned y cough, I see - It has been gone so long I had forgotten it till I got your letter. Monday I cleaned bathrooms & hall - Betty brought her sewing (putting new pockets in Eric's pants) up at 3 and we had tea. About 4 Grace (Wegees?) came over from Mrs. Kaser's bridge party and had supper with me and I took her home at 7. Yesterday your income tax bill came for $258.00 (just as you had figured it) and I sent the check to Des Moines right away - mailing it on my way to 6 hours work at the Ration Board. Today it was cold (40) and too windy and wet to work outdoors. I put 3 screens on living room, then just puttered - finally going in on the davenport with the new Post - Nan had brought egg whites up yesterday so I made an angel food and June came and got her half early in the
