October 23, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom + Grandmother: I've a little while before my ship returns so I'll write a bit. Had a busy morning, washed my head, shaved, took a bath, got some clothes out for salvage, got my laundry ready to go out tomorrow and swept up our tent. A regular housewifes chores only I had no dishes to wash only my own mess kit. So you've had a frost at last, how nice it held off so long. Expect by now it has frosted several times and hard, that's a good thing this to dry out the corn and make it ready to crib. Sure hope my crop is good and Bill gets it picked in good season. Think he will tho his is more of a hustler than Anton. They will soon began to pick and process olives over here, one of the Italian laborers said they are about done with their wine making and the olives follow that. After seeing the way most food stuffs are handled over here I think I'll be sure my olives come from California. I'm glad that Raymie + Ethel felt they could go to Colorado. I was afraid they wouldn't be able to get help and would feel they couldn't get away Now if Milan just gets his furlough and they can all get up to see you it will be grand. I started to write last night but we had too much excitement. Had a rat hunt right inside our house. The door was open all day and I guess he got in then but we didn't see it until evening. We had all our bags and belongings out in the middle of the floor and we were armed with shoes, newspapers,, sticks and a hammer. Even got a dog one of the boys had but the
