Saving...
October 24, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom & Grandmother: A nice fall day but it seems more like spring over here as things are greener than they have been for months. Don't know just what kind of a winter season to anticipate but don't believe it will be too bad unless it is too rainy. I now have a built in shelf on my bed at the foot where I keep my shaving stuff, toilet articles writing kit etc. Reminds me of some Rube Goldberg contrivance but utilizes otherwise wasted space and is certainly handy. Bill made a combined shelf & clothes rack at one end so our bunk is the acme in modern conveniences. Walked down from the mess hall tonight which really settled my supper down it's a long walk but it would be good for me I guess. We have a chow truck but I was in a hurry tonight and I think it had a flat tire or something. Got a letter from Austin yesterday, the first for a long time. I'll bet they are busy for I suppose he & Elsie are trying to farm way too much land. Said their crops were good this year and they had done real well with the hogs. Don't think I told you but when I went to see that show "Home in Indiana" the other night I got rained out. Was sorry too because it started out fine and was real pretty. Worked a cross word puzzle this evening got it all but one word and got disgusted and threw it away. Nothing more for tonight - Love Johnny
