Saving...
October 28, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom & Grandmother: Have another spare moment so I'll write a bit, would have written last evening but our lights were just a faint glow. If we read or wrote letters it meant using a flash light and my batteries were about gone. Still haven't caught any mice in our new trap, the rascals take our bait but don't spring the trap. Guess mice are the same the world over. We swatted one with a broom this morning but expect there are several around yet. They chewed up some more clothes but mine are in the box I built and so far have escaped. I noticed in our last nights Stars & Stripes some fellow from Crisco had received a Distinguished service medal for something or other. He was a navy man and no one I knew or had ever heard of. The grass on the hillsides that has been brown and scorched looking for a couple of months is now green and bright as can be. Gives the country a fresh clean look and almost springlike in appearance altho it doesn't always feel so. Reckon it's pretty cold at home now but hope they are having good weather for corn picking. This is P.X. day and we got a pretty good assortment of candy and gum but not much else. I had everything I needed so it didn't bother me any. I am certainly glad I stocked up on stuff before I left the states for we usually can't get shaving lotion, etc. Tomorrow is the official dedication of the new chapel and I want to go it possible. They have quite a nice program planned so I hear. The chow truck is coming by so I'll have to close but will write tomorrow - Love Johnny
