August 22, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom & Grandmother: Got two letters yesterday the first in over a week, one from you & one from Milan. He is now at La Junta, Colorado which is very near where I was stationed at Pueblo, he seems all enthused about his flying. I sure hope the war gets over before he has to come across. Stays hot here but the nights are cool enough to sleep which is a good thing. Expect it is hot at home too and the corn is making up for lost time. it is usually that way it seems. The season will be backward and then just bound along until it has caught up. There is very little corn over here that I've seen and what there is doesnt look like much. I've been sorting over my clothes & airing them out this morning. They have that barracks bag press which ain't good. Have my bedding out to air too and my laundry made up to send out so you see I've been on the ball this morning. The foot locker I built is a great help it is ant & dust proof which helps a lot. I dont know what to think about the package situation, I have had two packages of licorice and the wash cloths recently but not the birthday package nor the one you spoke of Dede Johnson sending maybe they will come before long however. I got Pliggs letter or rather Arlenes I guess she has assumed the letter writing duties of that family like some others I know. Bob knows about Vivians dental work. she must have decided to tell him. I expect he would kid the life out of her if he was around to do the work. He cleaned my
