Saving...
Sept. 7, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom & Grandmother: Another warm day, regular indian summer, cold nights and hot days. Cant realize it's getting fall already. Would like to have one of [Stepps?] water melons, we get melons over here once in awhile but they are very poor by comparison. They are kind of like honey dews but have a cucumber taste. Just had my shower the water felt real warm but the air was coolish. Our drainage system is not so hot we have to dip out water from the pit after each shower or rather about one man in five does and the rest beat it. Our war news certainly continues to sound good doesnt it. Things certainly happen fast when they start to break. Guess some of our leaders have planned things out pretty thoroughly. Had a good meal tonight creamed chicken with rice but it was good. We've had stew every evening for a week so it was a welcome relief. Everytime I see sea food meals advertised when I get out Ill think of C-rations and wont even care for fried shrimp. Mail still isnt coming thru very well some fellows I know havent had any for a couple of weeks but I've been more fortunate for I've had two. Dont suppose mine come thru too regularly either. I havent been writing oftener than every other day, there just isnt anything to write and Im not very imaginative anyhow. Suppose school is in full session by now and Dickeys fishing has been brought to a halt. I expect he'll soon be old enough to be interested in football and be playing in regular games. Hope he wont bet banged up as much as his dad always did.
