Sept. 10, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom, and Grandmother: Have just come from supper and mail call, had a letter from you and an announcement of the new baby as [Hay?] my gosh it's too bad is wasn't a boy, maybe they would quit, they sure have a house full of girls now haven't they. You maybe better find something for me to give her. Gosh she is a big girl. It's been [easier?] here today while was a welcome relief from the [illegible] we've been having. Fixed my bed up some yesterday and it's a lot softer now, haven't had a mattress but rigged one up, getting old you know and I need a soft bed. Took a helmet later tonight for [illegible] shower is broken down. Had a can of water and in the sun so I had nice warm water and I got the dirt off okay and my tan is several shades lighter. Wrote a letter to my [illegible] today moon hope she's feeling better and remembers to keep up a show [illegible] instead of her usual [illegible]. Would be nice if Dave could get a discharge when the European battle is over. I guess they will discharge some of the older officers. How's the corn crop doing? is it as late as they thought it would be early or not. Sure hope we can get another good crop and expect we will. What did Dad do about the extra land Bill rented, or did he get and this year, think I remember he intended to get some [illegible]. Are we
