Saving...
Sept 18, 1944 Italy Dear Dad, Mom & Grandmother: I've had a bush day but an interesting one for a change. Went to a nearby town in charge of a work detail to pick up some material; always enjoy riding thru the country, even Italy. The grapes are almost all picked as well as the almonds, couldn't tell about olives don't know just when they ripen but didn't see any on the trees. The farmers are plowing or scratching up the ground with a one horse plow in most cases and it doesn't look so hot. They were most all small truck patches tho and vineyards no big fields. The fellow who drove our truck was from Ottumwa and used to travel thru our town on a meat route for the Morrell Packing company. Of course he too thought it the best state in the union. The Texans are supposed to be the most loyal to their state, but we Iowans run them a close second I think. It's cool here tonight I dug out my woolen undershirt and it feels mighty good. My shower tonight really brought out the goose bumps but it was invigorating as could be and when it was over and I got my breath I felt good. I'm going to enclose some snap-shots today noticed on our bulletin board that most restrictions have been lifted. Will make this short so it will go air mail. Love Johnny
