To prevent the smoking of a lamp Soak the wick in strong vinegar before using it & dry it well. ---- To receive the Electiric shock from a Cat. Place the left hand under the throat. with the middle finger & thumb slightly gripping the bones of the animal's Shoulder, then gently [wiping?] the hand along the back, sensible electric shocks will be felt in the left hand. -------- Cure for the flu Take [beet?] roots, cut them into pieces & boil a quart until reduced to a pint in [illegible] water, then add a quarter of gin and drink near a tumbler full on going to bed. ---- Quick-lime well dried & pulverized is said to increase the explosive effects of gunpowder, often mixed with twice its weight of the latter.
