December 17, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: This has been a good day and I got a lot of work done. Not cold but just enough nip in the air to fill a fellow with pep. Got mail last night, a card from the Carrs, letter from you one from Mrs. Lynch and one from an old friend who is still in California. I've had supper, carried fuel for the stove, got some water and now have my moccaisons on taking it easy. I'm kind of tired tonight, but it won't be long before I hit the hay. That's literally too for most of the fellows have brought straw from nearby farms and have their mattress covers well stuffed. Don't expect the snow you mentioned in your letter (Dec. fourth) stayed long if it was no colder than you said. The snow on the mountains disappeared for a few days then got a fresh covering
