December 21, 1944 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Will write a few lines before I turn in for the night. This is some of the stationary the Carpenters sent me. It is nice to write on but still I can't think of anything to put on it. Just had a treat, some raisin bread toast with plum jelly on it. We had raisin bread at the mess hall tonight and a fellow in a neighboring tent got the spread. Ate three pieces so am really gorged now. It's a bit disagreeable tonight, not cold but spitting rain. Makes a pleasant sound on the tent roof, really lulls a guy to sleep. Everyone else is in bed so I'd better get there soon. We staged quite a mouse extermination today found where the little buggers were hiding and killed eight of them. Don't reckon we got them all but should slow down their visits for awhile. Had three cards tonight from Carroll Morris, Dede Johnson, M. L. Petersons and two V-mails from you. My allotment check seems to get there in very good time each month. Rather expected it would take
