January 4, 1945 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: This has been a grand day, warm and sunny, a welcome relief and sure hope it continues. Worked without a jacket during the middle of the day and that's something I don't think I'd have done at home. Meant to write last evening but I read a little while and got so sleepy I couldn't hold my eyes open. We have a bunch of Readers Digests, Coronets & Magazine Digests in our shack and I haven't seen them. One of the fellows got a whole box the other day. Got a Deo [Maius?] service edition tonight mailed the twenty second but no letters. Seems as tho mail has slowed up again but it will catch up one of these days now. Day before yesterday I sent home a hundred bucks and a fifty dollar bond so perhaps you'll get them as soon as you receive this letter. You can be on the lookout anyhow. The money wasn't a money order but thru the government service so may take awhile for it to get there. Got my laundry back today but it must have laid in the rain someplace for most of it was wet as could be. Hung it around in the
