January 16, 1945 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Had a pleasant surprise yesterday afternoon. Donald Hunt from Fayette came over to see me for a short time. He's located quite a piece from where I am so he couldn't stay very long. Wish he might have spent the night here but his pass was only for a day and he couldn't do it. I must tell Aunt Jennie I've seen him for she has often asked me. We had quite a visit and compared notes on what we'd heard from back home. Hadn't seen much of him after I got out of college but it is certainly good to see a familiar face. Got a wetting this afternoon, was working out in a kind of half rain which finally soaked thru my sheepskin jacket. Came in and got into some dry things and haven't been far from the stove since. Didn't get to chow tonight but dipped a little deeper into my Christmas box reserve which is on its last lets. Boy I'm thankful for our good tent and stove. A fellow can really appreciate things he used to take for granted. In last nights mail which was practically me, I had a letter from Grandmother written by Rosa. She had mis-addressed it so it
