Saving...
February 1, 1945 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: A whole month of the new year gone by doesn't seem possible but I crossed off every day on the calendar so it must be. Wonder if the ground hog will see his shadow tomorrow in Iowa, wouldn't venture a guess at it here for the weather is very changeable. Had a letter from grandma in last nights mail and it was quite a bit better than the last one. I could make almost all of it out. I have written to her within the week but will try and write again soon. Have all my bedding out to air today and it's a good day for it, we have enough room now so two of us can have ours out at the same time. We were paid yesterday but don't think I will send any money home until next month. Got a haircut and shave yesterday, looked too shaggy to go thru the pay line. We have two pretty good barbers and recently got another tailor in our service club, it's a great convenience and he's very reasonable on price. Must salvage some fatigues today one pair is in shreds and it won't be long before my others will go. Takes some time to get things back but perhaps I'll get them in time. Will sign off for now. Love Johnny
