4 quite a lot about their mentality. One day she knocked at my bedroom door, and I went to open it. I was in a petticoat slip perfectly covered up and decent, but when she saw me she shrieked and shrieked, and put her hands over her eyes. In between the piercing yells she managed to explain that she "really must ask me to clothe myself." Considering that in her own home she shared a room with two sisters, we would scarcely have expected such excitement over a slip that was far more "decent" that any evening dress. Well, the point of this tale is that on her return to Paris she sent me a bundle of novels that she had read, and it seemed, simply adored. They were
