10 of the lecturers at the British Museum used to talk to me wistfully of the lovely decorations (birds in flight) in the American Natural History Museum, and of the treasures there. I think it must have been hard for him to "keep his hands from picking and stealing" as the catechism says---naturalists are really awful old devils. They would cheerfully resort to crime to get a really good specimen. I know a dear old man, botanist, whose behaviour when out after rare plants is more like that of a murderer covering up his tracks. He actually showed me some of his 'finds' and told me where he got them---nearly as good as a proposal of marriage! A propos, you appear to be keeping to single blessedness---which, considering the amazing cussedness of the average husband, is probably the most sensible
