Jan. 16,1944 Sunday a.m. My dear Helen- I was certainly pleased to receive your grand newsy letter telling me so many things I have been wondering about you and I am hastening to reply hoping this will reach you before you leave. A letter from Helen [Focht?] yesterday told me you were still on American soil so this may arrive in time. I am so glad you are really enjoying your work. I knew you had gone into Basic school and am glad for your report of the course. We are sending no more to that school now so I guess you were lucky to get into it when you did. Your description of the hospital and your work there I was particularly interested in (at Fort Devens). It coincided exactly with the work I have seen at Jefferson Barracks so I think my little description of the work which I give the applicant seated at my desk isn't too far off the track. We have been hiring principally Staff Aides for foreign service during the past few weeks and that quota now is reduced. I am passing on all foreign applicants - unless the Director has time to see some. Do you remember the Mrs. Shapleigh who interviewed you? Well I'm now the Mrs. S. of the office. The fact that Madeline Carroll became a St. Aide was a great help in recruiting "gals" for that job. Recreation jobs for the moment are practically filled. I'm
