Dexter Iowa July 2, 1916 My dear son Conger: If you were here with us today you would not want to sit in the kitchen where I was cooking with a big fire in the cook stove (frying chickens for instance) Or sleep tonight between soft blankets to keep warm. Mercury soared to ninety two the past two days, and I feel as though I am getting thawed out, and feel fine. Hot weather for me. It is a joy to live these days. The landscape is superb, with all the varied tints of green, and the soft blue haze lying so caressingly over it. It fills me with awe and a sense of mystery I cannot quite understand.
