March 25, 1945 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: Had a pleasant surprise this afternoon Spud Ballard came over to see me and we had a nice visit. He looks fine, doesnt seem possible its almost four years since I'd seen him last. Was just like dropping in the engineering office at the courthouse. Certainly wish he might have stayed longer for I'm sure we could have talked for hours. He's been all over this theatre in his work and seen a lot of country. Got a V-mail from you tonight, first for three or four days so I've some others to look forward to I know. Just finished making up my bunk, had my blankets out all day in the sun for it's been a beautiful day. One of the fellows has turned in and is already snoring. He can fairly make the stove rattle and the walls heave in and out like a Disney cartoon. Dont usually hear him for I sleep very soundly. Is Dave's colt spoiled or is she a good saddle horse. Dont imagine Clyde ever rode her much nor had her well broken. She was a pretty thing when I saw her last do hope she turns out well. Been pretty busy lately and have
