Saving...
April 3, 1944 Italy Dear Dad and Mom: Well our plans went awry and I didnt get off on my planned trip to Rome but will in the very near future. (I hope). Dont know just what was wrong but it just shows a guy never to plan on any thing too hard. It's been another fine spring day picked some flowers, poppies and some I never saw before. Think part were weeds but they had nice blossoms. Havent got any garden spaded up yet and the ground is so hard it may have to wait a bit. Played ball again this afternoon and our side was lucky enough to win. It's strictly sand lot style with lots of errors but we have a lot of fun and its good exercise for a fat man. Got a nice long air mail letter from you tonight and the Des Moines service edition. Enjoyed both. Glad to hear the Hahls are doing so well out on the farm. Guess I'll close with this note and go take a shower + shave. Just got notice I leave on pass tomorrow. Love Johnny
