August 10, 1945 Trinidad Dear Dad & Mom: We're all awaiting anxiously further developments of the rumored Jap surrender, just got the twelve thirty news cast which told us nothing more. How I hope it is nearly over. There is kind of a tense hidden excitement among the fellows some not believing it, others optimistic. Still working nights but really believe it's the best shift a bit cooler no doubt and there is little to do evenings anyhow. Our department has kept ahead of schedule so far and is operating quite smoothly. Glad I'm situated there rather than on the line [illegible] inspections on the planes. So Chuck [Curtis?] is getting bald headed, we're getting to be old men for sure. He'll hit the thirty mark in a couple of days too wont he. Glad he made a good talk at Rotary he is capable I'm sure. Got your letter mailed the seventh this morning, it's almost a sure bet they come in three days from home. Dont believe our letters are censored at all from here, have you had any which have been opened & sealed on the end with cellophane tape? They were to be spot checked when
