Saving...
August 15, 1945 Trinidad Dear Dad & Mom: The wonderful news came to me last night in the movie of the U.S.O., in Port of Spain. Almost immediately whistles started blowing down town, ships in the harbor joined in, and the show practically emptied. Our days off were resumed yesterday and it was my turn so I went to town, rather expected the news all day, ate a good dinner in the cafeteria then went down town and shopped around a little and visited the botanical garden. The gardens were nice, they are situated on the government grounds where the governors mansion is. Most every type of tree that grows are there, rubber trees, camphor, eucalyptus, nutmeg, lignum vitae, teak, brazil nuts, the one you get citronella from etc etc. Saw beautiful orchids, hibiscus, bougainvilla and lots of other flowers I cant remember. Went back into town after the news to see the crowds, the people went wild, singing, beating on drums & cans, playing horns, parading & dancing in the streets. It reminded me of one of those african movies with voodoo dancers in it. This morning no one went to work and the C.O. declared a holiday so I'll get another day
