May 8, 1945 Italy Dear Dad & Mom: This has been a holiday for us, no work. This morning we had a meeting at which the official notice of our victory was read to us and a short prayer by the chaplain, then there were ball games and other entertainment the rest of the day. I just loafed all day and this evening I went to a baseball game which wasnt so hot, I am really happy about it and hope my next move is what I think it will be. Yesterday Bill & I took a pass to Bari, the first day passes either of us ever had. There wasnt much to do but we saw a movie and ate ice cream at the Red Cross snack bar. Think we walked ten miles at least just seeing what we could. Went down by the water front where the fish markets are. These people certainly eat some dreadful looking things, all sorts of clams, mussells, squid, octopus, smelt and a number of things I couldnt recognize but they smelled to high heaven. They seem to make an outing of going there, small tables lined the dock and people would buy what they wanted then open up a basket of brown bread, lemon, olives etc. and proceed to picnic.
