May 28, 1945 Bagdalio, Italy Dear Dad & Mom: enjoyed my day at Pompeii and am just loafing today so Im having rather an easy time of it so far. This place has been almost like a rest camp and I guess that's as it should be for a lot of the fellows are waiting to be shipped home and out of the army perhaps. Its cool and overcast today looks as tho it might rain but I wouldnt mind that for we have a good roof and no mud to wade in. Was real warm yesterday and I sweat like a trooper for there is quite a little walking on the Pompeii tour. Some of us plan to go on a hike up Mr. Vesuvius the train goes part way up but there is an hour & a half climb on top of that. The Red Cross has a beautiful writing room where Im trying to write this. It is a modernistic building with a large circular corner of solid windows which one can look out and see the Isle of Capri. I'd like to go over there if I could and I understand they do run excursion boats over there. It has been made a rest camp for flying personnel and wasnt open to everyone but now this war is over I guess thats been changed. Naples is quite pretty now, flowers in bloom, gardens etc. We drove thru it yesterday for
