and English but one could make out what he was saying. One thing none of them are bashful about is asking for tips, cigarettes, etc. We get paid today and cash in our lire which we have on hand. Dont know whether or not there will be facilities for sending money home or not but if there is I have a little extra which I can send. I've been getting mail here, had two V-mails from you last night, the twenty second & third also had one from Ralph. This may be the last letter I'll write for awhile. Oh yes I meant to tell about the descent down Vesuvius. Instead of coming down the winding path we went up we came right over the side in an almost vertical slope of loose ashes. It was one of the strangest experiences I've ever had, every step would be about twenty or thirty feet long. Kind of a floating sensation about half falling, rather like skiing, had to watch for sharp rocks all the time, several of the boys spilled and rolled for a ways and got skinned up but I was lucky. Only took ten minutes to come down. On looking back one could scarcely believe it possible to come down where we did. The pay line is assembling -- Love Johnny
