written on train, Postmarked St. Louis, Dec 13, 1917 Wednesday 7 p.m. Sweetheart, Writing is going to be a difficult feat on this bucking bronco of a train, but write I simply must. I know you have missed me today; I hope, though, you have not suffered as I have. If the bitterness of it were not so completely offset by realization of the one great fact that you love me, I don't know how I should hold together. Of course, that is all I ought to think about. It is permanent; the parting is temporary. Still one can't go through such happiness as ours has been together and not be tortured by having it so disturbed.
