were building a battery on a hill 6 miles from this fort and they began to throw shell from this fort and they drove the rebels away. These 2 guns are about 15 feet long and the twist in them goes about 3 times around in the length. They are brich loading guns. We went out on the fortifications yestaday as far as Cloud's Mill. I supose you have heard of Cloud's Mill when the battle of Bulls run was the rebels made a stand there and we had a skermish with them there. We have to go most there to drill. The county is so hilly that we cant hardly get a place to drill but I must bring my letter to a close for it is most dinner time. I will send Alonzo letter to you one I got last night
