Address to his army in the papers he says that defeat lurks in the reare. MacDowell has layed at Fedricksburg all summer most and has been skarte of about 1500 rebel cavalry, but such things are stoped now. I shall be so as to be around I guess in a fortnight or so if my wound does as well as it has so far I don't know from whether I shall get a chance to come home and stay a little while or not. I can get my Discharge if I want to but I don't want it. I don't want to turn back now unless I am disable so I shall have to be discharge. I don't know wheather I can get a furlough or not. This is all I can think of today. Write soon as you get this so good by. From your son C. A. Gates Direct as before
