that was between us an the rebes on the 
morning of the 17th our army advanced 
and attacked the rebs soon our whole 
right wing was engaged.  We with them as our battry  We kept driveing them back slowly each side receiving reinforcements till you could not here nothing but the roar of cannon.  About noon the whole left wing of the rebs gave away throwing down their arms and ran.  We kept on fighting till dark put and end 
to it.  Night found us tired and hungry 
and in posesion of Sharpsburg Heights 
But we had gained the day but a great 
many of our comrads were no more. Our Gen. Richardson was wounded and

of the first Division of our Corps
