I will tell the rest when the fighting is over at any rate the rebs hold their position yet which is a very strong one. We ought to have cross the river when we came here but we had nothing to cross on. I supose the peopel at home will lay this to our comanding General. We have layin here most 4 weeks and nothing to cross an finely the pontoons come on the 10th. and on the morning of the 11th our troops comenced laying the bridges and at daylight our battry open on the city of Fredricksburg. The city was soon in flames but it took our forces until midnight before they could make a crossing over the
