I have not heard from Lon since the 4th of May. They are haveing [sic. having] pretty warm times nere [sic. near] Vicsburge [sic. Vicksburg]. I hope old Grant will meet with sucess [sic. success]. The takeing [sic. taking] of Vicburge [sic. Vicksburg] would have a greater affect on this war thean the takeing [sic. taking] of Richmond. Richmond is of no acount [sic. account] only as a bare [sic. bar] of oposition [sic. opposition] for future plans while Vicburge [sic. Vicksburg] cuts off over Half of the Confedecy [sic. Confederacy] and openes [sic. opens] a chanel [sic. channel] for the comerce [sic. commerce] of the whole North West. I havent heard from Aunt Cornelie in a long time. I dont see what is the matter this is all I can think of this time so good by from your son C A Gates
