chief rival took things. I wrote her from the N.P.C., just after I went to Washington, and it is likely that her reply went astray. I don't think, though, that she would say what she felt. I knew beforehand how things would go and accepted the remorse I felt for ever having influenced her as part of the price I was willing to pay for your love. I was quite helpless. I love you only as I had never before loved and knew I never could love another. And I know from the way my love stands the test of this separation that I was right then. I - but never mind, you understand. That's the beauty of your being my own wife. How sorry I am I didn't get that promised cake! Wouldn't I like to see an American cake - or pie - now.
