nex' night. - In looking over some general orders today I ran across one which settles the hash on the beautiful plan I had of having you near me. There is no chance it could be done. Since I have learned what conditions are over here I'm just as well satisfied not to have it possible. I shouldn't want you to go through the experience I did dodging subs. Then there is no safe place you could be. Paris is being bombed almost nightly; I wouldn't have you taking the risks there. And you couldn't get into the army zone, where I am. Even if I get leaves I shall probably have to spend them where the government directs, not where I may want to go. So even if you were in France I might not be able to see you once a year. These reasons are added weight to the finality of the order which specifically provides that wives of officers shall not come over. I haven't heard from the Sanborns as to whether they are coming over, but it makes no differ -
