any attempts of Boche aviators to cross the lines. The towns I saw had not been shelled, but some of them had been bombed. Buidings where the bombs had hit were surely a mess. I visited the hospital where Archie Roosevelt and some more Americans who have been wounded are recovering. We didn't get to see any of them though. I heard officers giving orders about real operations against the Huns and hearing reports of what was going on up where Americans are having their early experiences of actual war. We covered so much ground and saw so much that played upon my impressive imagination that I find myself all confused in trying to write about it - in this fashion anyway; I might find it easier on a typewriter. Today I escorted five lecturers on a trip to a school and a flying field and the rest station of some of our troops who have seen service
