Thirty-three. 3-17-18? Just Out of the Trenches. Daphne, belovedest, - It hardly seems possibly here in the quiet of my little room that it was this afternoon that I got my first glimpse of the German lines, heard the roar of German guns, and watched the bursting of German shells. But it's true. I've been up to the real trenches and I've at last seen a bit of the war as it is being fought. It happened thus: I was instructed this morning to accompany a visiting major Quacking [Mgh?] up to our lines. We started at 10:30, riding in a luxurious new National. A little after noon we reached a shell-wrecked village, [illegible] left the car in shelter, donned steel helmets, and got our gas masks ready for action, and proceeded on foot. The road we took was well within range of the Boche guns, as evidenced by shell-holes
